Jharkhand Government banned sale of thermocol plates
Jharkhand Government banned sale of thermocol platesJharkhand Government has imposed a ban on the sale of thermocol plates in the state.
It was announced by Chief Minister Raghuvar Das.
By banning thermocol plates, the state government aims at Promoting of leaf plates in the state Generate employment for the poor and tribals who are engaged in making leaf plates.
Apart from this decision, Chief Minister also announced Rs 1 lakh to villages in states which become liquor-free.
What does thermocol contain? Why is it harmful to the environment?
- Thermocol contains an important thermoplastic compound, called polystyrene which is obtained by the polymerisation of styrene or phenylethene.
- The chemical properties of phenylethene are identical to polyethene.
- It responds very slowly to bacterial decomposition in the soil, thus making the soil infertile.
- It also releases poisonous gases on burning, which can cause respiratory problems, or even death, when inhaled.
- Hence thermocol is harmful for the environment.
